世界第一品牌Herman Miller在歷經十年的研究後，於1968年正式推出全世界第一款組合式屏風系統辦公家具Action Office，因而開創了全新的辦公環境，掀起了辦公家具的改革風潮，而成為全球現代辦公家具製造廠商競相摹仿的對象。

回顧Herman Miller百年光輝史    早於1905年，Herman Miller的前身Star Furniture Company,即開始於美國密西根州的Zeeland市，專門從事於高級歐洲複製居家家具生產。1923年，由於D.J. DePree和他的岳父Herman Miller先生成為公司主要的股東，所以將公司更名為"Herman Miller"。    1930年代，Herman Miller因應美國經濟大蕭條的時代變動，在Gilbert Rohde深切體認欲在新時代中創造一個更富彈性、精緻空間的生活方式，必須改變家具形式。及倡議產品應滿足使用者的真實需求，摒除繁複裝飾的設計，並在精益求精中賦予產品新時代意義。因此，極力說服D.J. DePree將經營重點由昔日的傳統住家家具轉變為現代辦公家具。因而使Herman Miller正式跨入現代辦公家具的領域。1939年由Gilbert Rohde設計，於1942年推出的"Executive Office Group"辦公組合家具，正是現代辦公家具的雛型。

1945年，George Nelson成為Herman Miller第二位設計顧問。他的經典作品包括Coconut chair, Marshmallow sofa, Nelson table & Platform。Nelson辦公室的設計師Irving Harper設計了Herman Miller的企業Logo；被譽為全世界最佳十大Logo之一。Nelson對Herman Miller最大的貢獻包括引進Isamu Noguchi等世界頂級的設計顧問。Alexander Gerard是Nelson引進的色彩及織物設計家，從1952年到1970年，他替Herman Miller設計了全系列家具的布樣及色系。    1946年，Nelson引進全民最有名的設計師Charles Eames和他的藝術家太太Ray Eames。合成夾板和玻璃纖維製品Eames在二次大戰時最大的改革。Herman Miller到目前仍有生產Charles Eames全系列的家具。長久以來，Herman Miller所推出具前瞻性的系列家具，不僅深獲使用者喜愛，更為各方的家具收藏家及博物館典藏。這些都是Herman Miller所擁有的一批世界知名家具設計專家長期投注研發的成果，其中Charles Eames更於1985年被世界設計協會譽為本20世紀最具影響力的設計師。

 1950末，Robert Propst在Ann Arbor設立了研發部門，於1968年正式推出全世界第一款將辦公家具精簡至最基本的屏風、桌板、吊櫃等單元的新世代辦公家具"Action Office Series 1"，創造了全新的辦公環境，帶動了辦公家具使用新文化。   

 1976年，Bill Stumpf設計了全世界第一張人體工學椅Ｅrgon Chair。Herman Miller在1980年成為Fortune 500大公司。1984年，全世界第一款塊狀屏風誕生了。Equa Chair被譽為80年代最重要的三樣設計產品之一。1994年，Bill Stumpf & Don Chadwick共同設計的Aeron Chair ，突破了傳統椅子的包袱，一推出後就被紐約現代博物館作為永久珍藏展示品。Herman Miller居家一系列的產品，在市場受歡迎的需求下，於1994年也再度帶回居家家具市場。    

2000年，第一款120度放射柱狀屏風系統Resolve又以引人注目的威力推出。迄今，Herman Miller發表的系列商品及公司營運屢次獲得來自各方的獎賞殊榮，並成為跟隨者摹仿的目標。   二、公司殊榮（一）1986年至今，Herman Miller於財星雜誌（Fortune Magazine）在美國800名商業經理人的票選中，一致列為最 令人讚賞的家具公司。（二）1986到1989年間，Herman Miller被財星雜誌列為美國十大最受景仰的知名企業。（三）1989年，因為推廣成員所有權的概念，獲得商業倫理雜誌（Business Ethic Magazine）的1989年度最佳倫理獎。（四）因擁有最高的合格成員比率，而獲得全國建議體系協會（Notional Association of Suggestion System）1989、1990年度的組織群體獎。（五） 公司的創辦人D.J. DePree，於1990年7月被引入商業名人堂（American Business Hall of Fame）。（六）1992年3月，董事會主席Max DePree為知名的財星雜誌所報導。（七）1993年，Herman Miller因為良好的企業溝通整合和設計計畫，而成為由財星雜誌和美國設計中心(ACFD)所贊助的Beacon獎的四大得主之一。

Design Story

Ambi responds to today’s ergonomic realities by providing high-value, lower-cost ergonomic seating. Designed by Richard Holbrook, Ambi derives its name from the Latin word for "both." Ambi provides both comfort and superior ergonomic support. Its adaptability allows it to perform both as a general office chair and dedicated task chair. It fits both large and small people, and everyone in between. 

Herman Miller applied its three decades years of ergonomic seating research to the design of the Ambi chair. That research was supplemented with focus groups and user tests of benchmark products, which showed how people were dissatisfied with existing chairs in the mid-low price range. Common complaints were uncomfortable seat cushions, flimsy arms, tilt mechanisms that didn’t provide a balanced ride, and poor lower back support. Based on this kind of information, design criteria from the customer’s perspective were established that guided the design process. 

Later in the development process, Ambi prototypes were field-tested and measured against the competition. Also, R&D testing made sure the chair meets today’s real world workplace needs. For example, the tilt mechanism was subjected to a minimum of one million cycles-more than five times the ANSI/BIFMA requirements. 

Holbrook designed the Ambi chair entirely with a computer, using 3D modeling technology. To ensure the chair’s quality and durability, its performance was measured by parametric modeling, which goes well beyond what testing alone can simulate.
